This seminar will focus on disasters and the importance of planning before a disaster occurs. What steps should a commercial property owner/manager take in reducing risk in advance of a disaster? During large scale disaster scenario’s like the Calgary flooding, real life example will be provided about what a property owner/manager can expect from their restoration company and insurer. Specifics on risk assessment, ERP/BCP, table top exercises, emergency response equipment will be discussed and the current
impact of climate change in Southern Ontario which is resulting in more extreme weather events and the cost it is having in the commercial property management industry.

John Stephenson has worked in the commercial property management industry for over 20 years, during that time John spent 11 years with Cadillac Fairview as the Director of Security & Life Safety at the Toronto Dominion Centre and as the Director of Security at the Toronto Eaton Centre. His responsibilities included emergency and disaster response for those facilities. John has managed every type of emergency from major flooding, fires, power failures, medicals, shootings, bombing and even death by misadventure. After C.F. John joined Bell Canada as a Senior Security & Emergency Management consultant, working with commercial property management companies, hospitals and schools providing emergency management planning and training. For the last 8 years John has worked in the emergency restoration industry and has been a first responder attending major disasters in Canada to assist commercial companies in their recovery. Some of those catastrophic events include the fire that in gulfed Slave Lake Alt., the Calgary flooding and the tornado that struck Goderich Ont. John has published articles on emergency response with the Canadian Property Management magazine, Canadian Condo magazine, & REMI. John has provided radio interviews across Canada on a variety of disaster subjects and has also been a guest speaker on topics of emergency response and security with BOMA, PM Expo, IFMA and the World Conference on Disaster Management.
